Expert Workshop: „Little (Big) Women in Late Medieval and Early Modern Era“ (Event–Private), Opava, CZ

Researchers from territorially and historically related regions dealing with the issue of pre-Modern family and changing position of women in various social situations will participate in an expert workshop. The results of this workshop will be published in a form of a textbook (training material for the upcoming summer school – in English). The academic participants (three from the applicant’s institution, five from partners‘ institutions – 2 PL, SK; 1 UA) will present their work and research on the topic in a workshop. The workshop will be held on the premises of the applicant’s institution (Opava). The event can be held in a hybrid format if needed. However, personal participation of active participants is expected. Each of the expected seven participants will have 30 minutes to present his/her contribution. The workshop should be held in English. With the consent of the active participants, the presenter can give their presentation in their native language (with an English handout for the participants and a PowerPoint presentation in English). Active workshop participants from partner institutions will be provided with accommodation for two nights. All-day catering will be provided for workshop participants on the day of the workshop (this is a full-day event lasting at least 8 hours). All materials for event participants will be provided online. The necessary materials (program, name tags, handouts) will be printed at the applicant’s expense. All the participants will be recommended to use public transport (bus, train) when traveling. Travel cost of active participants from partner’s institutions will be reimbursed. The aim of the event is to establish (or strengthen existing) contacts in the field of gender and family history research by means of introduction of the research orientation of participating academics. Workshop will also serve as a preparatory meeting for the organizers and academic participants of the summer school. Students and academic staff from all the participating institutions can attend the event. If necessary, the event will take place in a hybrid form.

The main topic of the planned event (summer school for students) will be the life strategies of women and their changing position in the pre-Modern society considering especially the situations when they were forced to play a role that was not primarily intended for women – with emphasis on sources and their correct interpretation. The aim of the project will be not only to acquaint students with the roots of existing gender stereotypes and with the beginnings of women’s emancipation, but also to teach them to how to proceed when interpreting various types of written sources. The summer school will start on Monday evening with a reception (on the applicant’s premises). During the following days (Tuesday, Wednesday), the students will attend several seminars (6-7, duration: 90 min each). Seminars will be prepared and conducted by the active participants of the spring workshop. This part will be accessible to students from the Ukrainian universities in the form of online seminars. As part of the afternoon program (in-person only), students will attend memory institutions located in Opava (archives, museum). On Thursday, a trip to a nearby Raduň will be prepared for students and academics participating in-person. Here they will visit the Raduň Castle and its grounds. At the end of the summer school, students will receive a certificate of completion during the final evening event (Thursday). Students who will participate online will receive their certificate in an electronic form. Foreign participants from the V4 countries will be provided with accommodation. For the duration of the summer school (Tuesday – Thursday), all participants will be provided with meals during the day (coffee/tea breaks, lunch, snacks). All participants will be advised to use public transport (bus, train) for transportation to and from Opava. Accommodation for 15 students for 4 nights during the summer school will be provided in the accommodation facilities of the organizing institution. All the participating institutions will present the information accordingly (in accordance with the Grant Guidelines).
